Green supplier of the year
We are very proud to announce that last week WowGrass picked up the much anticipated “Green Supplier of the year” Award at The Event Production Awards.
The Event Production Awards is attended by the industry’s finest organisers, suppliers and contractors and aims to showcase, highlight and reward success and excellence.
To scoop the award, we showcased how WowGrass’s headquarters based in York utilise a “Whole Business Approach” when it comes to making the WowGrass grass product.
Solar Energy
At WowGrass we actively promote green energy through the use of solar panels that provide enough electricity to run the nursery year around including powering the sprinklers to keep the product well-watered throughout the summer. Where there’s solar power, remote water pumping becomes a possibility because it enables producers to bring the energy to the equipment.
Saving Water
We also have our own boreholes and a sophisticated irrigation system of energy saving with variable speed pumps, ensuring even distribution of water and avoiding excess use. The borehole draws water from the plentiful supplies in the sandstone aquifer which runs under the Vale of York.
Fertilisation
The fertilisation process of growing grass has also been modified to be more sustainable through Foliar Applications. Foliar feeding is a common practice of supplying nutrients to plants through their foliage. It involves spraying water-dissolved fertilisers directly on the leaves. Foliar feeding means that a very high percentage of the nutrients are taken up by the plant rather than being leached through soil application.
Sustainable Materials
The WowGrass product itself supports other British industries, for example the felt that the WowGrass is backed onto is made up from recycled British textiles, reclaimed from the textile industry and is a completely unique product manufactured solely for the use of the WowGrass product and other Lindum products.
Recycling & Reusing
On WowGrass projects we try to bring back the WowGrass that hasn’t been completely damaged back to the field where it is laid back down, fed, watered and hopefully with some favourable weather conditions it will restore back to perfect health, allowing us to reuse the product. Mostly the seconds are used for smaller projects, we have even been known to offer it to animal enclosures at London Zoo so that the animals can enjoy the product and because it is completely plastic free it is not harmful to them.
Carbon Footprint
Natural processes such as plant photosynthesis annually capture 3 gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere. ... The large root systems in grasses make them better at separating carbon in the soil than other plants. With Lindum (Wowgrass’ parent company) growing over 1000 acres of grass per year including the production of the WowGrass product, our overall carbon capture is huge.
We really do pride ourselves on our extremely “Green Product”.
The Event Production awards said. “There can be no denying the WowGrass team’s dedication to providing a sustainable product grown in the most environmentally friendly way, that offers a great alternative to traditional plastic astroturf.”
We are delighted for the company to be recognised as Green Supplier of the Year, as it is a true recognition of our efforts to produce a really sustainable, natural and plastic free product which our customers clearly appreciate.
